Law Student Writing Competitions
Clear, forceful writing is an important legal skill, and Western New England University School of Law trains our students in developing and refining that skill. In addition to submitting their writing as class assignments and Law Review Notes, our students also enter these national and international writing competitions and have their work published in professional journals.
In 2007, our students won first prize in two prestigious writing competitions. Brendan J. Witherell won the Ladas Memorial Award from the International Trademark Association (INTA), for the best student article on trademark law. Brendan’s article, The Extraterritorial Application of the Lanham Act: The First Circuit Cuts the Fat from the Vanity Fair Test, was published in the Western New England Law Review, the law school’s legal publication, at 29 W. New Eng. L. Rev. 193 (2007). The article carefully discussed and evaluated a recent court case of great significance to trademark law. Another third-year student, Tracie Kester, won the 2006 William J. Pierce Writing Contest, sponsored by the National Conference of Commissioners on Uniform State Law. Tracie's winning submission explored the need for, and proposed text for, a Uniform Disposition of Bodily Remains Act and is entitled, Can the Dead Hand Control the Dead Body? The Case for a Uniform Bodily Remains Law. It has been published in 29 W. New Eng. L. Rev. 571 (2007).
