Constitution Day - September 17, 2014
The School of Law celebrated Constitution Day with a panel discussion entitled "Ferguson and the US Constitution" in the Blake Law Center's Law Commons. University faculty explored the relevance of the US Constitution, and of our particular Constitutional history, to the fatal shooting of Michael Brown by an officer of the Ferguson, MO Police Department. They focused on the Constitution's treatment of race, both in the original text and post Civil War amendments, on the role of the US Supreme Court in establishing and perpetuating the "outsider" status of African-Americans, particularly young African-American males, and on the militarization of local police departments in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. The moderator was Professor Bruce Miller (Law) and the featured panelists were Professors John Baick (History), Bridgette Baldwin (Law), and Matthew Charity (Law). The event was sponsored by the Institute for Legislative and Governmental Affairs.
