Color of Law Series Hosts Alexis Highsmith
Thursday, October 6, 2011
As part of the Color of Law Roundtable Discussion Series, Alexis Highsmith, attorney at Greater Hartford Legal Aid, Inc., delivered a lecture titled "Career Path: Education Attorney" on October 5. During her presentation, Highsmith discussed her current profession as well as the experiences that helped her get to where she is today.
She shared with the audience that “the thing that I like the most about working with low income people, is being able to provide a voice to people who really can’t self advocate on their own and whether that advocacy is through getting an attorney or through their own self advocacy, a lot of people just aren’t aware of the resources that are available to them and not able to provide their own representation.”
Highsmith continued saying that “defense attorneys and prosecutors have a duty to their clients, whether it is the state or the actual defendant, to advice them in a right and correct way.”
The next Color of Law speaker will be Julie Alleyne, in-house counsel for The Hartford, on November 9.
