Center for Gender & Sexuality Studies to Feature Panel Discussion on Gay Marriage and the Supreme Court

Posted Wednesday, March 6, 2013

The Western New England University School of Law’s Center for Gender & Sexuality Studies will host a panel discussion on “Gay Marriage and the Supreme Court” Wednesday, March 13 beginning at noon in the Blake Law Center Commons. This event is free and open to the public and refreshments will be served.

The U.S. Supreme Court will soon decide two cases that challenge the validity of laws restricting gay marriage. Justices will consider the constitutionality of California's Proposition 8, a law passed by voters in 2008 that restricted marriage to heterosexual couples. The Court will also hear arguments about the Defense of Marriage Act and whether its restrictive definition of marriage for federal purposes violates the equal protection guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution. Decisions in these two cases are expected to have a major impact on gay marriage rights.

The panel discussion will feature Western New England University School of Law professors Erin Buzuvis, Leora Harpaz, Bruce Miller, and Giovanna Shay as well as third-year law student Chris Erchull. Those in attendance will also have the opportunity to voice their opinions during the event.

Established in 2012, the Center for Gender & Sexuality Studies is a resource for students, alumni, and faculty of Western New England University School of Law, the legal community, and the general public. The Center works to engage with the legal community, with the University, and with members of the School of Law on core issues of gender and sexuality across a broad spectrum of law, including criminal law, immigration, employment, family law, health law, discrimination, prisoners’ rights, legislation, leadership and business, and international and comparative law.
