Posted Wednesday, May 1, 2013
Western New England University School of Law will hold its 2013 Commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 18 at 9:30 a.m. at Symphony Hall in downtown Springfield. The ceremony will include the awarding of approximately 165 Juris Doctor (J.D.) and Master of Laws (LL.M.) degrees. Lois Lerner, director for the IRS Exempt Organization Division, will deliver the commencement address and receive a President’s Medallion.
Lerner is a 1978 graduate of Western New England University School of Law. In her current position, Lerner oversees approximately 900 employees responsible for reviewing applications for tax-exempt status, developing guidance and rulings, conducting examinations and compliance activities, and carrying out customer education and outreach efforts. Recently, she led the first comprehensive redesign of Form 990, the information form filed with the IRS by tax-exempt organizations. The redesigned form enhances transparency by providing key financial information and information about the activities, operations, structure, and governance practices of exempt organizations.
Lerner served for 14 years as the Federal Election Commission’s Associate General Counsel for Enforcement and later as Acting General Counsel. She joined the IRS as Director of Exempt Organizations Rulings & Agreements Division in 2001. She is a member of the Massachusetts Bar and past president of the Council on Governmental Ethics Laws (COGEL). In 2008, she received the prestigious COGEL award, given annually to one who has “made a significant, demonstrable, and positive contribution to the fields of campaign finance, elections, ethics, and freedom of information or lobbying for a significant period of time.”
