School of Law to Hold Commencement May 18
Posted May 16, 2013
Western New England University School of Law will hold its 2013 Commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 18 at 9:30 a.m. at Symphony Hall in downtown Springfield. The ceremony will mark the achievements of 159 graduates representing 19 states, with 135 receiving their Juris Doctor (J.D.) and 24 receiving their Master of Laws (LL.M.).
Just days before the ceremony, the University announced that Commencement would proceed without its scheduled keynote speaker. “Western New England University has been notified that Lois Lerner, director for the IRS Exempt Organizations Division, has chosen to withdraw as guest speaker for the School of Law’s Commencement ceremony this Saturday, May 18,” said Vice President Barbara A. Moffat in a statement to the campus community. Lerner was thrust into the national spotlight recently when she revealed that IRS agents had unfairly targeted several conservative groups for additional scrutiny. “In her notification to the University, Ms. Lerner cited her wish to have the ceremony focus on a celebration of the achievements of the graduates,” said Moffat.
