Center for Gender & Sexuality Studies Discusses Racial Profiling

Posted Wednesday, September 11, 2013

The Center for Gender & Sexuality Studies at Western New England University School of Law will host a panel discussion on “Profiling, Race and Masculinity: Florida, Massachusetts and Beyond” on Wednesday, September 25. The event will take place at the Blake Law Center Commons beginning at 12:00 noon and features a panel of experts including Attorney Luke Ryan who has represented criminal defendants in racial profiling cases, Community Police Advocate for the Springfield Police Department Charles Youmans, Florida journalist and author of Age of Barbarity Billy Townsend, and Detective within the Narcotics Division at the Montague Police Department Leon Laster. This event is free and open to the public.

Speakers will discuss race and profiling in the wake of the Trayvon Martin killing and the trial and acquittal of George Zimmerman. The panel will make connections between well-known examples of profiling and lesser-known instances closer to home.

Established in 2012, the Center for Gender & Sexuality Studies is a resource for students, alumni, and faculty of Western New England University School of Law, the legal community, and the general public. The Center works to engage with the legal community, with the University, and with members of the School of Law on core issues of gender and sexuality across a broad spectrum of law, including criminal law, immigration, employment, family law, health law, discrimination, prisoners’ rights, legislation, leadership and business, and international and comparative law.
